So I was driving my 99 eclipse gsx today and floored it and about 5 or 6k and it stuttered and backfired... the car has 130000 miles, its got a brand new intake and exhaust from the down pipe back. The only thing I can think of is the fuel pumps going bad. Please help!

Stock fuel pump?

Mine did that. I upgraded to a Walbro 255, problem solved.

I had a ran a 255 on my old tsi with the stock fpr for years with no problems at all. It did run a little rich at idle but it worked. I would recommend a adjustable fpr but in a pinch you could just change out the pump if the pump is indead the problem.

Oh god. What's going on in here? How come everyone is just assuming it's the fuel pump? There is pretty much zero evidence that supports that claim. Granted, no more than any other claim but why are we throwing out all logic and reason today?

1) Have you performed a proper boost leak test?
2) Have you inspected your spark plugs and ensured an appropriate gap?
3) Have you ohm'ed out your spark plug wires or swapped them with known good wires?
4) Have you tested your coils?
5)Are you aware of what "fuel cut" is?
6)Have you or the previous owner attempted a fuel pump re-wire?

There's plenty of things that should be checked prior to just assuming the pump is toast, which it still could be.

You will find many examples like this thread, many who solved their "fuel" issues with proper maintenance of their vehicle and understanding of what fuel cut is and how it acts upon our vehicles.

Felt like a brick wall! LOL. yes its the stock fuel pump... did you upgrade your fpr when you put in the 255?

No, I did not upgrade my FPR. From what I was told, its suggested, but not mandatory until you're looking to upgrade your injectors and tune (which I'll be doing within the next 1-2 months anyways).

Car still runs beautifully.

I'm not saying I'm an expert, I'm sure there are many people on this forum that know more than I do, just telling you the issue that I had (backfire/'hitting a brick wall' feeling), what I did to fix it (Walbro 255) and now my car runs great.

im running stock boost. i just put all brand new hard intercooler piping on my car and went thro and mad sure everythings tight so im pretty sure its not a boost leak. i just figure it was the fuel pump cause the service engine light came on about a week ago and got it tested and all they could tell me was somethings going bad/wrong in your fuel line. just figure it was the fuel pump after it felt like i hit a wall and back fired

Wait, so the car through a CEL and you didn't mention it?

Okay.. let's back up a second. What code was it? Call the shop and find out. Get the exact P0number so we can reference it without their input.

Also, putting on the clamps weally weally well is not a boost leak test. Please perform a proper boost leak test.

One other thing, are you running an MBC? How much boost are your running, exactly (don't say stock)?
