anyone in the cali area with a 2g gsx i need some help. i need to know if my 7bolt with a evo3 big 16g, 550cc injectors, 255 fuel pump, greddy exhaust, greddy downpipe, safc2, wideband o2 sensor, fmic, will this pass the cali smog test. i am trying to sell my 2g to a friend of mine out there and he cant buy til it passes. will it or wont it or any ideas on how to make it pass the smogging. help me and maybe ican help you out

lower the price by $100 and tell the buyer to deal with smog..

no seriously though.. i just made a thread in the hangout a week ago about me passing cali smog.. im too lazy to look for it.. but bascailly.. i passed with all the mods i have in my profile.. except i put back the stock injectors

my old setup was a big16g.. and passed with all those mods too.. minus the injectors..

it all depends on the shop that you go to. Some guys will just throw it on the rollers and if it passes then its all good. Other guys will go and check every single part you have to see that they are all factory and have a CARB number on them. I have had to deal with both kinds of shops so you never know. I would try to stay away from gas stations and try to go to some ghetto shop. :thumb:

some shops have AWD dynos for smog and the ones that don't do a two speed idle test and a sniffer test.

oh yea? never heard of any smog places with AWD rollers.. can you give me an example of a shop that has one.. just curious. cause i hear those things are a lot more expensive than 2wd ones.. thus why i HAVNT seen any with AWD rollers

Actually, at my school, they run a smog referee out of their, and have both an AWD and a FWD dyno.

dang i wish my school had awd dyno's. i think we have 4 dyno's maybe 5. i think i'll ask one of the state marshalls about this. anyways lets face it, california smog laws are a royal pain in the butt! but to the average smog tech, well modified cars are huge money makers. the only way to really help it to see what trouble codes are shot back. tear down from there. you could have 2 dsm's that are identical when it comes to up keep on the car and modifications. yet 1 slight increase somewhere will throw some nasty codes. it's really hard to say. it's even hard to find shops these days that will do it for 1 or 2 hundred bucks extra. considering that the state of california cracked down so much when it comes to the active online database. all i could say is learn through trial and error. try to find a place where it's free if you dont pass and go from there.

swap out the 550's with stock 450's.

make sure the 255 isnt overrunning the FPR enough to run rich. if youre running aftermarket FPR and is noticed upon a visual, insta-fail, modified fuel systems are also a big :nono:

you have a wideband, if its rich, you fail, if its lean, you fail

dont try tuning it lean to pass, it only makes some other chemical more apparent(i can think of its name now) and that will fail also.

take off the fmic and run the stock plastic piping, side mount and BOV, as well as intake tube and recirc tube

the evo16g should be fine, it doesnt look much different than the stocker(aside from the j-pipe). most techs wont pick up on it. if they do its still a mitsu turbo, used on a 1g eclipse, which is still an eclipse, and came with the car, and you have no idea what turbos even do(playing dumb helps)

oh youre awd. well as long as it passes visual and clears the sniffer at 2500rpm neutral sniffer test, youre good to go. time to set aside a day to return to looking.

actually this statement is false. here is a complete list of smog shops/performance shops who can smog awd vehicles. they all happen to be located in california...

where does it say that they can smog the vehicle as well? the only AWD dynos i see on that list for the NorCal Bay area are non smog certified performance shops. I don't think anybody is going to be willing to drive down to SoCal or way out of their way to smog their car.

Yes, very nice to see who owns a Mustang dyno. California doesn't require a rolling test on AWD vehicles. Just an idle test, visual, gas cap, etc.

Is an FMIC really a consideration for the visual? I don't doubt that it is, I just despise that such stupid minor changes will fail you even if you can demonstrate that it has zero impact on emissions.

*sigh*

Also, I've been under the assumption that not being on the dyno doesn't necessarily make the test go by easier and that if anything some places may be more stringent on the visual since that's all they can do - has anybody else experienced this? I've got a SMOG shop that I found off El Camino Real that would classify as one of those "ghetto" hole-in-the-wall places that seems to let things slide, so I'm going to try that guy first, but if that doesn't fly I want to find someone who's not going to be completely anal about it.

From my experience's in getting my cars that I modify to pass and talking with smog tech's, here are some of the things they look for, if you have a sticker under your hood that shows the vacum hose routing they will visualy check to see if all hose's are hooked up they get very anal about hose's that don't conect to anything, another thing they are very strict about is a functional egr&pcv system they MUST be hooked up and working to pass the visual and tailpipe parts of the smog, also they check for things like coolant bypass's which are common in cali, check to make sure you have your 02 sensor's and that they are hooked up make sure you are running a cat etc. Generally if you have the major things hooked up like the vacum/egr/pcv/02/cat/intake hose's&in a turbo the wastegate lines&bcs hooked up, they won't sweat you, but that is only my experience with a few shops in my local area. Hope this helps BW

here is the link when i passed smog

http://dsmtuners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=180381

if i can pass.. most of you should pass.. with all my mods one would think i wouldnt pass.. esp how my car looks (although stock look.. looks certainly like soething is going on)

i have a cf hood so i dont have the sticker under the hood with the hose routing.. tech just ignored it and made sure everything was good? also i didnt even have my hose from the valve cover connected.. and i removed my charcoal canister hose so both were into the atmosphere..

this was at a TEST ONLY center which goes through the rigourous tests..

im sure i couldve passed with the bov vented to the atmosphere..

just make sure the tell them the car is factory turbocharged.. thats what i said when they looked at my t3/t4 turbo haha
