I've been searching for a number of days now and I can't seem to find a solid answer to my question. I have had my CEL on for about a year because of a "Massive Leak in my Evap System". I assumed that it had to do with my Evap Can (Charcoal canister) so I finally began to fix the problem by removing the canister. On 98-99's, the canister is behind the front bumper on the driver's side. To cut to my question, I removed the canister and now I have 2 lines left open to the atmosphere (they are the hard lines that run under the radiator and are attached in the same spot that the radiator fan bolts thread in to). They both went directly into the canister, so i assume that one is the "in" line while the other is the "out" one. Should one of these lines be vented? And also, can I just remove both of the lines all the way back to where the battery is and hang a line off to vent the fumes under my car? I hope my question is clear enough, if you need clarification, I would be happy to do that! :)

How do the lines for your charcoal canister hook up? If somebody removed mine, I want to see if I can find the lines or any evidence of tampering. I also want to see whether or not if the lines were capped or vented.

On my 99 the lines ran from the charcoal canister (located in the bumper on the drivers side, like the above pictures), then they run below the radiator (the lines are bolted to the radiator) with a combination of soft and hard lines, then up the chassis on the pass. side back to where you have the pieces now.

Do the lines connect to that valve I have pictured in any way? I only ask because that valve is connected to my intake which usually should be connected to the canister. The pictures are a lot of help. Thanks. I do not recall seeing any hard lines bolted up to the radiator. Also is that plug connected to the canister? If so, where does it lead to? I also do not recall a loose plug dangling from that area.

Here's some pics for ya. Turbosax has some much better pictures that shows pretty much everything.

the pics he showed where the right spot.. its supposed to be right under the battery tray on the pass side of the car, its a big canister... someone obviously took it out you can tell it was there and they put some sort of bypass valve or smaller purge valve..

He has a 98' meaning that it would be on the driver's side front bumper. 95-97 were underneath the battery, while 98-99 were by the driver's side front bumper.

I too thought I was missing my charcoal canister when I found these lines unplugged.

I dunno but im with crimsondragon on this one...
I have a 98 and i dont have the charcoal canister like other years do. I think that in the 1st pic, that is the canister because its the only thing connected to the egr. And i dont have that canister on the driver side either..

Let's see if we can get some other 98 GSTs to chime in. Maybe even 99's. I wonder if this is like a new way to eliminate the canister.

Well, crimsondragon said that he knows his dad didn't do anything to the car since he bought it so maybe in certain states the cars didn't come equipped with them. But than that doesn't make any sense so. Also, possible that maybe its an early production 98' that could of still had it underneath the battery. If you have your trusty Hanes manual you'll see it says for 95-97 turbo models to remove the battery to get to it. Doesn't say for 98-99 but its behind the driver's side front bumper.

It's under the battery, near the firewall.

hey guys i have a 98 gsx i just removed mine from the car so i could have sum room for my fmic do you know which lines to plug and which one is the fuel line so i can get that vented ### im only seeing two hoses.

I am now in the process of re-installing the charcoal canister, and I wasn't smart enough to take pictures or notes to remember how to reconnect everything. My questions are; in the first photo, does that line coming off of the smaller canister remain open to the air like that? In the second photo, does a smaller line just get pressed into the larger one coming out of the canister and then clamped before being connected to the hard line (I was going to cut that smaller one to length if this is indeed true). In the third photo, are those two large lines hooked into the sensor correctly? And also, how do you know which hard line the two hoses go into coming off of the canister? Any help will be appreciated! By the way, someone earlier asked me to let them know how it went having it off, and the truth is, I took it off in hopes that it would eliminate a check engine light, but when I checked the codes, there were 3... with one related to the canister. So I have been working on the other two and hope that this will fix the last one.

I have a question...I noticed a loud whistling noise from the passenger side of my 95 gsx when I get on the throttle PERIOD. whether its a little or wot it does this. I'm also getting like 8mpg and it smells like its running rich (no i don't have a air/fuel gauge). I checked all my clamps and hoses and everything is tightened down. My boost gauge reads -20 vaccum at idle. My turbo isn't bad so its not that. I still hit 14 lbs with no smoke or loss of oil/coolant. And my smic has no holes. I've heard the charcoal canister can be a major boost leak. When I checked today there are 2 lines and one of them had nothing on it. No vaccum line, nothing blocking it off. I'll post a picture as soon as I can.
