Can I use just a check valve in place of the PCV or do I have to have the PCV valve installed with the check valve. I think I know the answer but just double checking.

They both do the same thing, stop boost pressure from entering the crank case, one or the other honestly. If you use the old PVC valve, soak it in the brake clean and blow it out. Crud gets stuck in it causing them to leak slightly which is what those little check valves were a band-aid for. A simple cleaning of the stock PCV is all it needs.
