I was going to check my piston to valve clearance using clay but I wasn’t sure what to do with the lifters. Should I bleed the lifter down so it compresses when the valve-train is rotated? Or do I want to the lifter to be solid so the valve moves as far as it possibly can?
When the car is running and there is oil pressure, does the lifter still compress the same distance it does after bleeding it on the bench? I was thinking that if I made the lifters solid, I would be able to measure worst case scenario, but if the lifter never becomes essentially solid when running in the car, I don’t want to take measurements with a solid lifter.
I apologize if I missed a thread explaining this, but I searched and could not find one explaining the state of the lifter. Also, if the thread doesn't belong here I apologize.
Thanks.
