This thread is very old.Knock is when you have detonation/pre-ignition. Your "knock sensor" picks up this noise and the ECU tries to compensate for it. Closed loop/open loop are terms that refer to your O2 sensor feedback, and the state of the ECU. Open loop is mainly during WOT/spirited...
There are vendors selling flashable ECU's for $450 for the 3/s. I'm not too familiar with ECMlink V3, but I would venture to guess that this is very similar.
As for the reliability of the cars, I've been DD'ing a 3000gt since ~'09. A couple of those years were with a self tuned AEM EMS. Never been left stranded from something that wasn't a stupid mistake on my part.

If you need a stock DSM wastegate actuator there are some in the classified section, which would be much cheaper than replacing everything only to achieve the same performance.
