Does anyone know where I can go to find a ring and pinion gear set for a 4-bolt rear? Satan wants $565 for the set. I kinda exploded my rear end :( Also, does anyone know why this happened? Should I check anything else on the car to make sure it won't happen again. The car is a 93 Laser RS AWD turbo automatic if it helps. Thanks in advance.

I have found a junkyard unit for $250, but it seems a little pricey for no warranty, especially if I don't know what caused it in the first place.

not trying to say it was this but it causes it. Low oil or no oil at all. Some one sabotaged my 68 chevy by jamming a screw drive in the rear end gasket and it leaked all the oil out (i knew it was sabotaged cuz it was wet and we followed the oil trail all the way back to the parking spot i had been in) and the gears stipped and exploded basically. thats why i dont think it was low oil but i dont have experience with many things

I didnt check the fluid level before I pulled it apart, although I should have. I did have to drain quite a bit of fluid out of it though, so I don't think low fluid was the culprit. The car does have about 170,000 miles though, so perhaps it was just old fluid that caused it? The rear end looked dry on the outside so I dont think it was leaking anywhere.

That sucks… I haven’t heard of anything like this happening before… I would just buy a new rear pumpkin assembly with fewer miles. You will need one from 4 bolt 5p cars. Unfortunately everyone wants one of those rear ends because of 4 bolt upgrade, so finding one will not be easy.

Considering that a typical 4 bolt rear end goes for $400-$500, paying $250 for rear pumpkin is not unreasonable. You will be hard pressed to find a better deal.

I think I am going to go with the junk yard unit. Thanks for all the help guys. I am still open to any ideas on what caused this.

A previous owner was asking about doing all-wheel burnouts.

I don't think that's a lube failure -no blued, heated parts- I suspect shattering from abuse. Most of the damage you see there is from chunks being circulated and breaking off more chunks which were circulated, etc.

I ordered a rear diff from a junkyard in connecticut for $150 plus $25 for shipping. Should be here sometime next week. Thanks for all the help guys and wish me luck with the next rear end. :)

I'd second that. Speaking of chunks circulating..... is your diff in one piece? I've seen a truck with a similar condition that vaporized the diff and in turn sent that around the ring gear for a ride.

Other potentials......
A very severe shock load from wheel hop or high rpm launch.
Improper mesh of ring/pinion. (too much lash) <<<< combined with a shock load.

According to the Driveshaft Shop, Mitsubishi makes some of the hardest factory drivelines around (very high grade hardend steel). Which also makes them some of the brittlest, and not able to withstand shock loads.
