hey all
i have a feeling that this is a real longshot, but i'm gonna go for it anyway... i've got a 94 eclipse that i bought used, and when i bought it, i noticed a little toggle switch under the dash next to the driver's side door.. i asked what it was, and the seller said that it was a factory-installed alarm. the poorly-connected toggle switch makes me think that it was something that someone jacked into it, but i'm not positive.. anyway.. i took the car to the local auto shop today, and when i got it back, i noticed a skinny black wire hanging down by the clutch. they of course new nothing about it, and said they didn't do it...

now here's my question... that little black wire leads up to the main alarm electronics box.. and it goes into the side of the box away from everything else. i found in the main harness a ground and a wire that's spliced into a 12v line.. so i don't think that it's a power line... though i'm not sure. it's much smaller diameter than any of the other wires. my initial thought was that maybe it was supposed to be stuck under a fuse for power.. but i don't think so anymore. on the side of the alarm case (and on the PCB of the alarm controller) there is a sticker that says "239A D". hopefully someone can give me an idea as to where this wire is supposed to go to.. i havn't been able to find the spot that the wire broke off of (looks like it broke away from wherever it was before... )
if anyone is able to help me with this i would be VERY greatful
thanks

oh, and by the way... when the alarm worked, the indicator LED would be solid on when the alarm was off, and it would blink when the alarm was activated. now, the LED just dims a little when i try to enable the alarm, but the car still starts and everything (which it wouldn't do when the alarm was activated before)

thanks again

Your year had no factory alarm. I wonder if this was dealer installed, or you were dealing with the typical pinhead trying to sell you something.

I also wonder if your mysterious black wire is the antenna for an alarm remote you also didn't get. Is the end stripped as though it'd been pulled from a connector, or is it just cut? Otherwise, black us usually ground.

i actually thought the same thing about the antenna wire.. it would make an aweful lot of sense... but why else would the alarm not work properly all of a sudden? the car will start with the toggle switch set to enable the alarm, which it never would do before.. and as i mentioned, the LED indicator is acting funny.

it's not a power wire.. though i did try grounding it anyway and it didn't help any.. but it's only 22 guage.. it's a tiny wire and looks just like an FM antenna from a good quality receiver.. (edit) eh.. HOME receiver.. not car.. just to clarify :p (/edit)

the end looks like it could have broken off of a connection.. like the part that had been stripped stayed wherever it broke off of. it definitely didn't look cut...

but if it IS an antenna, why would the alarm not work anymore?

btw.. the alarm will still go off if i disconnect the battery and re-connect it... but it's obviously not working like it used to...

edit2:
btw... i meant to mention.. the LED DEFINITELY looks like a factory install.. there's a little raised edge around the LED that isn't something that could be added if someone drilled the hole... also, there are mentions of anti-theft systems on the fuse panel cover.... so i dunno....

thanks for any help!
