Yet another offset question. 38mm vs 45mm?

Hi all. First of all let me apologize for posting this under newbie forum (I can't post anywhere else). Second let me apologize for posting another offset thread :beatentodeath: (I've read a bunch already and I still don't know what to do).

Ok, now that that is out of the way let me lay down the skinny for ya. I've recently found some nice rims I'd be interested in on eBay. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=002&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&viewitem=&item=120108107999&rd=1&rd=1

I've needed new rims and rubber since I got my TSi and these seem like a cost effective solution. Anyways, here are the specs on the rims:
Size: 17x7
Offset: 38mm or 45mm (more on this later)
Rubber size options: 225/45/17 or 215/45/17 (there are more options but these are the ones I am interested in.

Ok so I want the 225/45/17's but I have a few concerns regarding the offset. You can get these rims in the 38mm offset or 45mm offset. Now my question is which offset should I got with? The 45mm is closer to the stock 46mm but it may rub. There is also the 38mm option which is far from stock. I have a stock suspension and I don't plan to lower my ride. I do plan to get new shocks (Illumina's or KYB's). I heard that going with lower offset (38mm in this case) can lead to the hub bearings wearing out faster. My other concern is that the lower offset (38) may lead to poor steering precision. Anyways, DSMWisemen what would you suggest? Should I go with the 45mm offset or should I go with the 38mm offset (I don't want to affect steering quality or damage my bearings). Any thought, opinions, and advice would be appreciated but please only post if you are speaking from experience or reliable knowledge. Thank you for your time in reading this, Tom. Cheers.

38mm is your answer.

Will give you plenty of clearance in and out and even fit nicely under a drop.

As for the accelerated wheel bearing wear, I dont have an exact number for you, but a 38 will be fine (I run 17x7.5-40 on the street and 17x9-35 for road racing).

Steering responce is not a factor of offset. It has more to do with alignments.
