Surrey,
Ok so my car started Vibrating from the shifter/steering wheel/pedals after i hit a bump the other day. The vibrations start at about 3500rpms and increase until redline. So i decided to take my car to a reputable shop that does alot of work on DSM's btw the car is a 96 Tsi awd. The shop tells me that it probably has something to do with the wheels and or tires. This was after the drove the car on the hoist and could not put their finger on where the vibrations were coming from. So i go home and put on another set of wheels and tires, take the car for a boot and the same vibrating is still there. The shop has told me that they don't think it is the BS-belt and that they don't think it is the motor mounts (which have nice sized cracks in them). Also one of the rear shocks is leaking fluid bad, its basically toast, but they don't think that is the issue either. So any help would be much appreciated.

so have you checked the b-shaft belt? it would be a good idea to make sure, if it did break it can get tangled in the main timing belt and just ruin your day. Does it do it while moving and sitting still?

I have also been pointing to the BS-belt, but my mechanic has promised that that is not the problem..... He was so sure that he said he would replace it for free. I guess i should ###### take the lower timing belt cover off, i just need to get a few more tools to properly do the job. If anyone has had any experience with cars that have lost their BS-belt, how bad are the vibrations and at what rpm range do they start?

The vibrations are when the car is driving and in gear, i can take it out of gear and coast and i don't notice and vibrations. Also i don't really feel any vibrations when the car is sitting still and im revving it it does not vibrate as much as when im driving and the car is in gear, but it does vibrate a little, im not sure if thats normal vibrations or not because i don't have another dsm to compare it too.

If you say your motor does not have the vibrating problem when you free rev it at a stand-still, then your balance shafts are not the culprit.

A bad motor mount will make you feel vibrations, but they would occur weather you were driving or free revving...so that rules out that problem as well.

Does your car steer straight after the bump? Have you had your alignment checked?

I had a bad axle bearing (I would assume a carrier bearing would be the same) that shook the entire car on acceleration, but not on a decel where the motor wasn't putting a load on the drivetrain. Is this similar to your situation?

Does the vibration occur at a certain speed, or is it constant when you start moving?

It is not speed related, it is rev related...... starts around 3500rpms, doesn't matter what speed i am at, but is more noticable at lower speeds, such as a 1st gear pull..... probably because 1st is alot shorter then the other gears. We also put the car up on the hoist and got it to about 140kms and the vibrations where there. The car does pull to the left but that is because the camber up front needs to be adjusted after i lowered the car.

I think what you are describing is pretty similar to what im seeing. Was it more noticable at a certain rpm or was it constant as long as you has the throttle open?

Turns out somehow when i hit that bump my brake rotors got warped. Pretty random if you ask me but anyways i just had to get them re-re'ed and all was good.
