My eclipse 's Auto trans runs fine.. only when if its running forward. My car goes in reverse but it has no power , i have to rev it up at around 3000rpm just to make it move.

btw I have searched the forum but didn't get any info.

hey does the tranny slip in reverse or does it just not move?.....Is it a rev then all of a sudden grab?
just want to know what it is doing before i say anything....
does it chatter when in reverse?
im thinking it could be your reverse band..
let me know

Thanks talondude4 for the reply!!:thumb:

The tranny just slips in reverse , it moves in reverse but really slow even around in constant 3000rpm. This is my 1st Auto trans so I don't know anything about A/T.

Btw whats the reverse band?

the reverse band is basically a clutch on an drum that engages, when put in reverse. if you keep driving on with it slipping like that chances are you will warp the drum, and break alot more internals. As of now u just need a rebuild, probably a new band, is all it prob needs...

if i were you i would do a whole rebuild any way... while im in there so pending on your wallet size i would go with a rebuild to be safe and know its fresh. :thumb: im not sure if that kit comes with the band or not? maybe some one can answer it...

write back if it makes sense... if not ill try to explain it better and in the mean time i will look for diagrams for you.

so looks to me u got a tranny pulling job ahead of you.

i am also going to say one more thing try doing a full tranny flush it may be the prob to... (try this first)....

Thanks again Talondude4!
Yes, your explaination makes perfect sense.
Wow the transmission kit is expensive! I will do the tranny flush 1st as you suggested. :thumb:

i had a tranny flush yesterday, they also changed the a/t filter but the trans still performs the same.. I guess i should wait a couple more days if things change.

Btw I have a friend with a 92 galant a/t tranny F4A22, would this tranny fit my eclipse? my eclipse is a 1992 base model. If the trans still performs the same after a week I will install a new- used tranny.

i know a guy at napa auto parts who recomended a product called seafoam transtune, it comes in a red and white can, and it cleans the vavle body in transmission, by just pouring it in. he said if that doesnt fix it, its time for a rebuild or a replacement transmission. he said that stuff is the only transmission cure all that really works. so dont waste your money on other stuff, but it sounds like the reverse band is toast. :notgood:

Thanks talondude I will buy that seafoam trantune.

A wierd thing happen with the trans. I was parked in a slightly slope drive way (front was lower than the rear) when I backed out the trans didn't slip at all. it worked just fine  but after driving back (10 miles) i tried to park again and the reverse was slipping again.

if it goes in on a slop I'm thinking it could be your valve body is clogged... that is what would keep it from going fully into gear. try the trans tune and let me know how that works.
i will do research on if that transmission will fit in you car. I'm not to familiar with galants.

My trans is not slipping anymore! Thanks talondude4!

I bought a can of seafoam transtune and poured it in my trans. Instantly the reverse ran alot better, the slipping is gone! I hope its permanent , i'll keep an eye if the performance dwindles again. :thumb:
