Ok So a few weeks ago I found out I blew my 80 amp Alternator fuse after working on the car for the weekend because my car kept going dead on me. So I fixed it, no problem, works fine now. BTW the car has a brand new alternator on it too. Now a few days ago just driving, I notice the lights get dimmer and theres no power on the top end of the car anymore, which is just what I experienced the first time. I check my palm pilot and the batt is now at 11.7v, then jumps to 14v, then to 11, then back to 14 and so on. So then I get home and park the car and get out, I check all the fuses again, and they all look fine. so now i leave the car running, and have my palm pilot out and when its sitting at 11v. so then i take the wooden end of an axe and hit my alternator while its running. BAM, back to 14V, then it quickly drops to 11v again, and I hit it a few more times and it keeps jumping back up then back down. So now I'm thinking, hey maybe the alternator is junk, so today i take it back to where i bought it and swap it out for a new one, no problem. put it on and it's not the problem. still at 11.7-12.0v. So whatduhell? I re-check the fuses, and pull apart all the wire loom and electrical tape on the alternator wires and check them for wear or shorts any anything suspicious, but nothing looks out of whack. but now when i hit the ALT with the stick again, nothing happens at all, no jumps of voltage, nothing. So what out the blue now is causing my electrical system not to charge? All the wires look in very good shape, the 80 amp alternator fuse is not blown, and the alternator is brand new. Im now out of ideas. Whats this alternator relay? could this have went bad and causing it not to charge? Im out of ideas now. your help is greatly appreciated, Thanks, Dan

Maybe something is left on during use that drains the battery, i.e. sound system. My amp would stay on after car was turned off and that shortened the life of my battery quick. You have any toggle switches or any thing else spliced up?

is it a BRAND NEW alt from the dealer, or a REMANUFACTURED one from autozone or such?

the reman ones are like playing russian roulette. sometimes its dead in a day, sometimes it lasts a week, sometimes a month, sometimes for the life of the car.

i replaced the alt a week after i got my car with a reman. lasted a good 6 months then died again. it was under warranty(lifetime from autozone) so i just got another one. that one died within a day. so i got another one, which died within a week. so another one, which lasted till about a month ago, then died. so i got another one, which is still pumping.

they dont last long if youre racing around and pulling lots of power at the same time. i was racing someone while the system was up really loud and thumping hard. at the first stop the cd player cuts out and the lights dim. the straw that broke the camels back. taught me to turn off the stereo when i race.

Ok, so I see almost everyone is leaning towards another bum alternator. Its odd though, as this has arrived "DOA" Also yes, its just a standard Reman'd alternator w/ lifetime warranty. And although it does seem odd it would still be the ALT, I will replace it today w/ one of my older ones from the 3 other turbo dsm's I have laying around, to check to see if that helps. Does anyone know what the ALT relay does, or if it went bad it could be causing it?

ok well i took another alternator relay that i had laying around from another of my turbo dsm's and that wasn't the problem, so the relay is good. I have not had the time to swap back to another alternator yet, ive been extremely busy all day, i will do that about 9 pm or so tonight. however, i did get to thinking, since the car is 14 years old and running on the stock ecu, is it possible the caps have leaked, causing it not to charge the system? im looking into every possibe option here. I dont know if the ecu has some thing to do w/ the alternator charging or not, so please help me out here. the car is a 91 turbo fwd laser, i dont know if its an eprom or not either, so is a 92 talon awd non-eprom ecu swapable? I ask this b/c this ecu has had its caps replaced. thanks for the help again, Dan

I had a the same problem with my HO alt and it was lose wiring at the alt. Tightened bolts down and made sure they were connected and all is good now. I believe the alt is internally regulated so the ecu shouldn't make a difference.

Try an optima battery, i ran into the same prob put 5 alternators on the car in 3 months, the battery was shot it would not hold any kind of charge put a red top optima in it and it was good. Never died again.

Sounds a lot like your new alternator is scrap. It happens. Replace.
Goddamn you. it was the new alternator. it was DOA. i threw on one of my older ones and bam 14v. i took the new alternator back and got my $150 back. its stupid shit like this that pisses me off. i feel ive wasted a thread for nothing, all because the autoparts store cant give me a good alternator to work with. oh well thanks for the help

Glad you figured it out. It seems like alternators always have ongoing problems like this.

Just my bit of advice, if there is charging problems always be sure to check the battery terminals AND cables. When I first got my 944 it wouldn't charge right. Turns out the positive battery cable had coroded inside the rubber several feet into the cable. $5 for a new cable and it works perfect.

95% of the time if its a charging system its the alt. the internal regulators dont like heat, and being 2" away from the o2 housing doesnt help. and reman ones, like i said, are hit and miss.

I've been through two alternators in a couple months. (optima red top battery).

are alternator problems rare, or are they pretty common with DSMs?

I'm thinking about channeling some air to it. Any thoughts?

alternator problems are usually pretty common on alot of cars, i know my alternator has went twice in 2 years on this car and on my moms silverado OMG it seems like it needs more replacing than the oil, luckily for the insurance thing at satan they give it to her for free caus its always within a year or whatever LOL!
