as the title says i have a crack in my front stock bumper and i want to repair it. in a post before i was told that went cant use fiberglass cause out bumpers were made of urethane. so i just wanted to know if there is anything out there that can fix cracks on urethane?

it can be melted back together
and use some kind of reinforcement on the back (screen)
i use an airless plastic welder, but an old crappy solider iron works too

can you elaborate!?? PLEASE! I have 2 cracks and want to fix them SO SO BAD! THANX so much! melt them together? soldering iron? please go on.

I used fiberglass and it worked great. I don't know what you can tell from my picture gallery, but the front was cracked totally in half and hanging down before I fixed it and painted it, and you can't tell a thing.

That's not going to repair very well. Shop for another cover, you'll wind up ahead and probably cheaper.

If you want to press on, check your local automotive paint store for the repair materials needed.

I'd say get the $7 or $8 Bondo Fiberglass Repair Kit at your local ghetto Wal-Mart Store. Just follow the instructions on the packaging and it should work fine for your bumper, you'll need to repaint it after of course.

The key is roughing it up a bunch. I ground it with a dremel, then sanded the repair area and beyond with 60 grit. Fiberglass will stick to pretty much anything that's rough.

Check out my gallery for pics of it. Go to the second page. The last photo shows my car when I first bought it, and then in the painting progress photos you can see the repair being done.

I'm pretty sure there are some Bondo-similar products that are made specifically for urethane repair. Call some body shops to find out. Sorry I can't help you more.

Fiberglass repair kit's wont work on urethane. Many things dont work with urethane.

I tore my urethane last year. My body shop charged me $100 to fix it. And another $100 to repaint the entire front bumper (the whole thing was banged up pretty good). I think they melted it back together, and then reinforced it in the back with a thick coat of some kind of glue or JB Weld or something. It will never be as strong as before, but it by all means wont be weak either. It should be cheaper than buying a new bumper, paying for freight to you, and then paint.

Dude I would Pull it together as best you can. MAke a Bracket for the back and just screw it in from the front. Paint the 4 small screws the green and it will be almost unnoticalble.

see what i mean ? :thumb:

why do peoples say that fiberglass wont work on urethane? Can I melt my bumper together myself? Or do I need to get a body shop to do it?

I have a complete urethane bodykit and fiberglass fenders. I originally wanted to mold my bodykit onto the car to make it look 'seamless'. My bodyshot tried and failed (they are a very good bodyshop - very experienced). They explained that urethane doesnt bond very well. It would not adhere to the fiberglass well enough to be permanent. They said it could work, but it would definitely crack after a short period of time. Fiberglass bumpers are know to crack and break very easily and urethane is not. Why would you repair a strong material (urethane) with the weak material (fiberglass). It is only as strong as it's weakest link, and that crack is definitely going to be weak if it's fixed with fiberglass. Just my .02.

Hes right /\ Fiberglass might work but that low to the ground. Ill put anything on it that it doesnt last too long , and no matter what you do your going to need to get it painted and thats $$$$. So look for a used bumper in your color....for like 140 bucks give or take some OR like I said before. just make a bracket and live with alot smaller more hairline lookling crack. :dsm:

and take out those half moon looking things in your bumper that looks like its putting pressure on the crack. there useless.

welder
i have seen them on ebay and in pawn shops alot cheaper
but they are worth every penny
