Whats your opinion on the 2g suspension for rally application, any thoughts you would like to share about what you have experienced while racing it.

I am very new to competition. I have completed my first year actually competing for the season. Let me tell you that this car has been a jack of all trades over the last 1.5 years. I have been auto-crossing, attending track days, Rally crossing, and even ice rally it as well. This car is much happier on pavement. I have learned a lot about the handling characteristics of the 2g. I am not all that happy with the front suspension setup. I run stock springs with kyb AGX struts at all four corners. I have to keep the struts fairly stiff to prevent the suspension from bottoming out so easily. This also affects how I can use the shifting weight of the car when maneuvering. I compete in Prepared AWD which limits to some extent what I can do to the suspension. The ride height is my biggest hindrance. To some extent I hold back, but love that I can hold my own against a Subaru dominated class. I have found tire choice has been the biggest improvement. For Rally-cross I have four different tire selections. I have three different types of winter tires for different conditions, and a set of gravel rally tires. I have yet to have any suspension failures and has been a tremendously reliable car considering. I have however decided to purchase a DSM to prep specifically for Rally-cross. I will be moving to Prepared FWD in a 90 Laser. I plan to use this exclusively for Rally and the 2g will stay on pavement. I have been itching to prep it more for track days but have been holding off the Brembo and Koni coil-over upgrades because of Rally. I would not choose a 2g for stage rally though. The front suspension design is terrible for that application. If I was sticking with the 2g for rally, I would consider the FEAL coil-over setup for gravel. Better valving and additional ride height. The 1g is better suited for rally.

If you are considering Rally-cross, I would highly recommend trying it (stock ride height). I find it is easier on the drive-train than pavement. The most important lesson to learn is power is not everything! Tires, suspension, and seat time are key to quick times.

Great info there, and thanks for the advice. I always thought the front upper arms would be a serious limiting factor as far as travel goes. Seems like McPherson style suspension will always be the go to setup for rallying. I hope you make a build thread/journal for the 1g, take lots of pictures! Also any reason you got a FWD for rallying? Will you still be able to compete against AWD cars, or be limited to 2wd class?

The fwd choice has a few factors. I am on a limited budget and will now have two vehicles to maintain. I have a very clean and rust free shell for 600. My fiance is showing interest in competing as well. She does not want to drive the white 2g. I will have much less hassle finding fwd parts versus awd parts. I also feel the car would be more competitive in a fwd class. In Prepared fwd, I can add a LSD which is a huge help. I am currently planning out suspension whether to piece a bilstein/kyb combo, or a true coil-over. It has been much easier to make updates on my FB page.

Spent the first (and coldest) week of the new year getting the White One ready for the winter Rally cross season. On the list was clutch, full timing job, water pump, timing side seals, and a fluid change. It was easier just to pull the engine and trans-axle for this job.

Found out why the clutch pedal was so light. This was the throw-out bearing:

On to the timing belt.... traced down some oil leaks....turned out to be the oil pump seal and a cam seal. The 97-99 mid cover is a real pain in the butt.

    Cam seal:

The season opener for the Detroit region was there in April or May. They had one or two more there after that. I don't much care for the Silverdome as the surface is in such poor shape. One of my favorites would have to he Belle Isle. Nearing the season there are other organizations that host autocross events that are reasonably close. If you are interested, I can keep you informed. I have yet to see another DSM at any events I have participated in (other than a 1g that runs stock AWD in Rally cross).

If you don't mind getting your car dirty, the closest Rally cross event is in South Lyon.

There really is no reason to get rid of it if you are not rebuilding. Failures come from a lack of maintenance. It is a real pain to do it properly taking into account oil pressure increase.

After a good bleed of the clutch system and a small leak from the trans which turned out to be an oil seal (must have been a FWD oil seal), the car runs great!

I also finally got some shots of the last track day!

Had a great day out on the Ice with SVR SCCA! The course was quite slick by the time we got to run the nearly two mile course! Here is one of our runs:
