Just got the head rebuilt, finally blew the head gasketwith 150k on the clock. I believe it was stock. Had the head rebuilt with GSC zero tick lifters, GSC factory replacement valve springs, evo retainers (stock DSM retainers will NOT work with the GSC springs) GSC valve stem seals, engnbldr valves & bronze guides, kiggly HLA, and stuck with the stock auto cams for now. When putting the head on the car I tried to do it myself with the intake and exhaust mani bolted on, it was a tad heavier than I thought and I ended up ruining a brand new factory mitsu head gasket:( I really wanted to get it done that weekend so I grabbed a fel-pro permatorque from work and hoped for the best. Had a buddy help me set it on this time. When doing the timing I realized I screwed up the last time I did the timing and didn't set the tension on the belt correctly and overextended my gates tensioner. Bought a factory mitsu belt and tensioner and set it correctly this time. Also while the head was at the machine shop (for two months) I installed a '90 ofh and b&m oil cooler. It was my first time working with an fittings, and I really enjoyed it, went a lot easier than expected. I also went ahead and installed a fuel lab filter and -6 an fuel feed, and a fuel lab afpr kit, also -6 an. The car has been running great for about two weeks now, still need to set the ignition timing so it's perfect, and also sprung a fuel leak near the tank. In the next couple weeks I plan to upgrade the fuel pump to a walbro 255, and run a new -an fuel line from the pump to the filter. At some point this year the turbo will get upgraded to a 14b, getting bored with the tiny stock 13g!

Right after bringing the rebuilt head home and ripping off the shrink wrap, felt like Christmas!

Other than screwing up a brand new mitsu composite head gasket trying to set the head on by myself with everything bolted up to it, the install went very quick and easily.

Fuel lab -6 an filter and feed line, went on without much trouble

Fuel lab afpr took a little more effort to install. Completely removed the solenoids on the fire wall (haven't been using them for quite a while anyway) removed the a/c fuse box (I've never owned a car with working a/c, always thought it was more trouble and maintenance than it's worth) made up a bracket from left over aluminum I had from making my oil cooler bracket, painted it black and bolted it up. Been working great!

That's where I'm at now. Been driving the car daily for two weeks, put about 200 miles on it so far. I've had a few issues pop up, valve cover is leaking slightly and I suddenly have a fuel leak near the tank. I dropped the tank about 6 months ago and fixed all the broken studs with RTM Racing's kit, but I think I'm leaking from the line coming out of the pump. I'm going to fix the sending unit and run an -an line from the unit to the filter in the next couple weeks. Thanks for reading! I've owned this car for about 3 years now and it's definitely been a learning experience for sure. I'll try to keep this more up to date as I fix issues and upgrade it along the way.

Oh yeah, and a pic of what the bay looks like right at the moment

And a couple interior shots, the back seats are going back in today, had them out while I was doing the fuel pump rewire (a year ago! LOL) and just been too lazy to put them back.

Forgot about this build thread for a while. I’ve done a bit of work over the past year or so. Upgraded fuel pump to walbro 255 and ran a -8 an braided line from the tank to the fuel lab filter. Leaked the first time and had to redo it, no biggie, good learning experience. Threw in a hallman MBC while I was in there.

Added an AEM wideband after I started datalogging with MMCD on a palm and realized the factory one quit working. I’ve got the AEM simulating the signal to the factory ecu.

Adding more later!

Bought a rebuilt 14b from a member on here back in November of ‘17, been working on porting it out here and there, not really in a rush to get it done.

Polished the taillights one night for the heck of it. Turned out pretty decent.

Also at that time purchased an FP manifold, factory water and oil lines and a bunch of gaskets/seals/crush washers. Still haven’t installed any of that yet. Also bought a new set of fuel injector pigtails from ohm racing that I desperately need to install. Solid motor mounts and old crusty fuel injector harnesses that are missing the clips make for stressful driving.

My 27 year old factory alternator left me stranded one freezing night in December ‘17. Replaced it with a remanufactured 90a unit.

Realized why my alternator quit.. the power steering pump had been leaking fluid on it for who knows how long. Thought long and hard about just deleting the pump, but decided to rebuild it and keep the power steering. Followed the write-up on here. Also ripped the manifold off to address an exhaust leak and install the FFWD manifold hardware.

More to come!

Time for my yearly update I guess! Haven’t done a whole lot to the car, sold my house and bought a new house with a slightly smaller, but attached garage. Also bought back my ‘89 Colt I owned several years ago and have been tinkering with that, might start a separate build thread for it. Been driving the Talon to work on nice days and the occasional cars and coffee. Never fails, at least one older guy will come up to me and tell me about how he owned in high school, and how much he misses it! Still haven’t swapped to the 14b yet, hopefully will tackle that project this winter. I did, however, finally replace the tired 28 year old suspension with a proper D2 coil over set up, and put on some beefier, stickier tires.

Almost forgot, finally got my first ever vanity plate!

I didn’t like the ‘friends of coal’ emblem on the left side, so I bought an Eagle decal from ebay just big enough to cover it. No pics of that, but I’ll snap one at some point because I also swapped the rear bumper from a parts car talon I bought. Said parts car talon was a twin of my car, auto awd, same color and everything! Bought it for $200, took a bunch of good parts off of it, and scrapped it for $150.

Also bought a ‘15 Hyundai Veloster Turbo. Needed something to daily that wasn’t 30 years old (you can see in some of the pics, I also drive a ‘90 2wd Toyota pickup. I love the Hyundai, it’s nice to have something a little more modern and with working AC now that I have a longer commute. I don’t have any pics of it, but I’ll have to snap some quick ones soon, it’s got a pretty sweet vinyl wrap that was on it when I bought it. I think that’s it for this update, hopefully I can keep up with this thread a little better, ha!
