    Coming Back

Welcome back! (again). Funny, I replied at the peak of my DSM days and now I'm just a broke graduate student with no DSM and a pile of debt :D Goodluck on fixing up your DSM.

    how to decompress rod tensioner

The trick to getting the right tension on the rod (whether you have a friend or not) is performing the above operation and then HOLDING the position with the wrenches for 15 seconds before you tighten the 14mm nut on the tensioner pulley. This way you allow the tensioner to adjust itself before...

    Low idle with a/c on

Have you boost leak tested to 25-30psi? Have you tested ISC&IAC for proper operation? Have you properly adjusted your ISC? Is your mechanical timing correct? Is your base ignition timing correct? Are you properly tuned at idle? Have you checked ignition operation when warm (i.e., transistor...

    Low idle with a/c on

You may want to check your alternator power with/without the AC on. Just to eliminate another factor.

    how to decompress rod tensioner

Good advice. If you did not originally put a pin through the tensioner before removing your timing belt, then you will need to compress the rod. Like said above, use a c-clamp or bench vise to SLOWLY (I mean 1/2 on the clamp every 15 seconds or so) compress the rod back down to where the hole on...

1997 tsi fwd, never went faster than 110mph..1995 tsi awd Haven't tracked her since 2007, sold in march 2010, never saw an 11second timeslip. :banghead: The goal of that car was to build the ultimate street DSM. 11 second street machine, full leather interior, fully daily driveable.. I'm...

    300 awhp???

The rest of the responses since my last pretty much demolished any question about the validity of meth, so I won't go there anymore. My last bone to pick is that you'd rather spend $3-400 on an evo3 intake and exhaust manifold vs. a meth kit? I don't understand the logic of this. Not only are...

car won't start, tried a lot.

There are dozens of DSMs being parted out and even more in the junk yard. Just spend some time finding one.IMO, a fubared wiring harness is a headache not worth figuring out. Call me crazy, but I'd take it as an opportunity to do some cleaning up, rewiring and tucking, but that's just me :)
  15. blcknspo0ln

    300 awhp???

Filling your methanol reservoir is the equivalent task of filling your windshield wiper fluid tank. You don't even need to mix your own meth, just run the blue stuff. Anyway, if you need to make 300awhp on 91, just make sure your car is up to mechanical health with ZERO boost leaks (I mean zero...

    premature gasket wearing

Stock, DSMs came with a flange on the downpipe that bolted to the long block. Torquing turbo bolts is not rocket science guys. Get an OEM (or whatever snazzy gasket you want), put it on, and torque the bolts down. If you need to get super anal about it, just torque all 4 in a X pattern to 20...

    Throttle Body Sizing

the 1G NT throttle body is the same diameter as a 1G turbo TB, except the NT has a partition to clamp a coupler on it.Keep in mind the 1990 1G turbo TB is also available and it only has 2 vacuum ports. Not important if you aren't running your emisison system, but it is important to some. It...

    Small cooling issue.

coolant = antifreeze. Water has a better heat dissapating coefficient (I forget what the scientific term is), so running more water will benefit you. If you need a thermostat, just order one to my house and I will ship it to you via USPS for a cheaper cost. I do this for a friend of mine in the...

    300 awhp???

25 psi on pump91, no meth will require a pretty aggressive tune.
  26. blcknspo0ln

car won't start, tried a lot.

If you are positive you have fuel, compression and spark, start looking along the hacked engine harness. When it comes down to it, there is not that many things to check. Start by physically checking each connection and making sure they are good. Next, check all fuses with a multimeter to ensure...

    Need some advice

Oh and being a former 2g talon awd owner, DO NOT part it out. That would just be a damn shame.
  28. blcknspo0ln

    Need some advice

IMO you should just buy a used running 6/7 bolt and just drop it in. All of this talk of replacing OEM valves and pistons for a junk car is kind of uneconomical. Unless you're making a quality street car, there is nothing wrong with running a used engine.
  29. blcknspo0ln

    Small cooling issue.

Agreed, put your thermostat back in. Stick with OEM or 10* hotter if you need to. Also look into doing the quick wire mod for having your fans come on together, when they do activate. Lastly, try switching to a higher water mix in your coolant and replace your coolant cap. I'd run an 80/20 mix...
  30. blcknspo0ln

    300 awhp???

It will depend on how the tune is and in what condition your car/mods are. 300awhp on 91 is possible, but is far less common to achieve than what people imagine. Invest in some meth and I know you can hit that mark fairly easily.
  31. blcknspo0ln

    Coolant temperature issues

I really don't think the 15 psi loss from cyl 3 is going to cause your cooling issue. Do a leakdown, though. It may potentially identify any coolant passing between the gasket somewhere.I was going to mention the coolant temp sensor as well, I know autozone and the like always stock them. I'm...

verify my timing is correct please *pics inside*

I know this thread is old, but the questions need to be addressed in case someone searches for answers:Never guess when you're doing a timing belt job. :cool:1. Camshaft alignment is always checked at TDC. Dowel pins pointing at or close to 12 o'clock.2. There is a crank notch...
  33. blcknspo0ln

    Bad alternator?

Sure, especially when the battery light is nonoperational. Just take the battery and alternator to autozone and get them tested, this way you take the guess work out of it.
  34. blcknspo0ln

    Coolant temperature issues

hah, I guess you can tell I was thread-skimming.Jeff, are you judging your coolant temps via DSMLink or an actual separate gauge? Also do a leak-down test while you're doing your compression test.

    Coolant temperature issues

Jeff, sorry for the late response (text me that you sent me a PM next time!). In my experience it has been the stock radiator that is the culprit. I've had similar problems running anywhere from 200-225*F with slimlines on all of the time via dsmlink, ducts, you name it, etc. Only when I...

JMF Coil pack & A/C....I did it!!

The bracket uses the top two bolts for the AC compressor and is always positioned in a way that is occupies the same space as the compressor, so you can't use both together. I only ran mine with a JMF SMIM, so I know there is plenty of room under the IM, but am unsure if the stock configuration...
