I hope you’re right about more DSMers taking longer trips. These cars really do have great road manners, making them fun to drive for long periods. One surprising thing that was a learning event: to view the preparedness of the car for a long trip, as opposed to small repairs that only have to...
It would be surprising if the ball portion is worn because IIRC, the ball is metal and the socket is nylon. If you have a Spyder and the local P&P, by all means, grab those parts. No one else would thing to reuse them. And you can experiment with techniques on the boneyard window first as to...
If the little black ball will not snap back into the socket, one of two things is happening:1. The socket is broken and will not keep the ball connected when released.
OR
2. There's not enough pressure to get the ball into the socket. You still have to be careful with pressure on the glass...
From your photo, it almost looks like part of the new roof separated from the edging. It doesn’t look like something that is supposed to be exposed, however, keep in mind that the storage area — for when the top is down — is a separate piece, so just wanted to make sure this is not something...
We understand your concern and frustration. It's scary delving into some of the projects you need to accomplish and wonder if you will get help if you get stuck. It's not that the senior members of this forum don't want to help, it's usually a matter of time available, and perhaps, a little...
Buy a MPH cluster for a GST or GSX offered for sale by members here, or from Rix Racing, or from Kannapolis auto parts. It will plug right in and work for you.Check the accuracy of the reading with a speed app on your phone. If it is off much, check the part numbers and get a US VSS...
Welcome Joe. Glad you are here to gather what information you’ll want, deciding to by a DSM, or after you purchase a DSM.For as simple as these cars appear, their mechanical tolerances are engineered precisely, particularly inside the engine and transmission. Repairing DSMs with a hammer in...
Not your exact setup, but I did pull the evaporator setup out when overhauling our ‘99 Spyder’s air conditioning. The firewall side had a hidden bolt underneath the AC connections. Maybe the heater core is further inside the duct work. Sorry, I don’t recall more.Just take it step by step and...
Nice call doing the timing belt first. The heater core should be serviceable from behind the glove box, but there is info on here to help with that.Nice color!
You should have 3rd gear too. Park and neutral are the same, and 3rd gear is forward motion with all shift solenoids turned off. It is why limp mode utilizes 3rd gear.It is possible that the transmission itself has an internal problem rather than just a TCU problem.Check your shift cable...
Congratulations on your Spyder. Owning and working on this car will teach you a lot, without any one project being extremely difficult.Glad you are going through the brakes now.As hard as it is to look at damaged fenders and peeling paint, if it means you can afford the timing belt...
It will be more exonomical if you can buy the rear disc calipers, parking brake cables, and backing plates from a member here, but you can still get the calipers online, since you’ll be ordering new pads and discs too. Here’s an instruction sheet on the steps you’ll need to do...
Although we’ve had both the 4G64 and 4G63T cars, we never tried a direct swap, however the radiator support is the same in both vehicles, so it is probably a direct swap using 4G64 hoses.Depending on if there is a thickness difference, maybe the top mounting brackets might be a little longer...
Thank you for your kind words. Why not customize the car the way it works best for each owner?I never thought the mods would get this far, but the more we use the car as a summer daily, the ideas just keep coming. There are several more custom mods planned for this winter and spring. We’ll...
A picture was almost impossible to get to show this accurately because the two black wires you need to work with both have color stripes that aren’t visible from all angles. For specific help, please DM us and we’ll go from there.
Not that I don't want to share details on here about security, but I encourage you to PM me the specifics of what your priorities are. Security is part of what I do for a living, and I can tell you that everyone has specialized needs and preferred methods of interacting with it, resulting in...
Congratulations on your diagnostic, mechanical and electrical skills advancement. It’s the trifecta of owning any vehicle, let alone, a DSM.After all of the failed starts or smooth idling, all of us are anxious for the final programming and driving.
4G64 Spyders’ radiators also have the upper hose connection on the far passenger side, which is why some turbo owners use them to clear large (and hot!) exhaust manifolds.
Before you disassemble the transmission, once you get the shaft removed, you can always try a slim, flexible shaft retrieving magnet in the axle hole, and inserted into the drain plug port to see if you can get lucky and find the ball.
Do you know if anyone has replaced the oem injectors? If your spark plugs are blackend, you're running too rich. If the injectors have been swapped to larger ones, you're dumping too much fuel into the combustion chamber.A faulty (partially plugged) fuel filter would cause a lean condition...
Congratulations on your new project. Having the parts car will be a great help as you can pick the best part to use on your build. Hopefully both are from out west and are rust free. This site has all the information you’ll need to move forward. Highly recommend you do all maintenance and...
Nice!Good thinking, but the problem has been building for a while and just we completed a brand new header, shown here, post #79.https://www.dsmtuners.com/threads/sun-burned-%E2%80%9999-spyder-gs-revived.483010/page-4#post-153896628
That’s a nice old tool. It looks to be alright for measuring inside of a curved surface. As long as the measurement will hold as you remove the tool, you can then use a modern micrometer to get a useable (mm) number to work with.
Beautiful color! Welcome to DSMTuners. We’rr here to help. The Tech articles will help if you have a specific repair, but also check the Maintenance Guide under the Resource section to walk you through changing all of the fluids soon.Looking forward to seeing more of your car.
Welcome to DSMTuners. Nice cars! If you’ve worked on cars before, making repairs and improvements will be straightforward for you, just different.Be sure you change all of the fluids and the timing belt soon while you make the other repairs. You’ll find articles here to walk you through the...
I understand the principle of what you are saying, but if a coil pack goes bad on my GM 3800, where two of the cylinders are getting a lower voltage than the other cylinders on a different coil pack, the engine runs rough.Perhaps there’s more at play with this car and it’s not the coils, but...
Please explain. What else might cause this? Smoking and smelling rich at idle and low speed (maybe high speed too — can’t tell). ISC stepper and TPS and BISS seal all replaced and calibrated. Idle timing set to 16* per our tuner (N/A car). No WB as of yet, but the scanner will log fuel...
Thanks for the input. After 178k miles, just seems the spark is weak and causing an incomplete burn even with new plugs and wires, especially at lower rpm’s.We’ll check to see if there are some electrical measurements we can do to see if they are still in spec, and how the new, delphi ones...
Looking for replacement ignition coils and have visited the forum sponsor sites as well as a few others. The only ignition coil offered has terminals on the base of the coil pack, and the mounting holes do not line up with the holes on the bracket. Here are the coils that were on the car and...
Yeah, they’re backing out. Too much oil in the threads for lock-tite. Will have to address this next season.I’ve worked with oil pans that have a extended straight washer the measures about an inch in both directions from the bolt. The thicker metal distributes the bolt force along the edge...
Changed the oil and filter, getting it ready for winter storage. Also tightened down the oil pan bolts for the 20th time!!! 😡 Apparently, the pan bolt tightening will have to be part of every oil change routine from now on.
