I had the exact thing happen and it was the converter. In neutral, the input shaft spins with the converter housing which is why you don’t hear the whine. You may have caught it before it started sending pieces through the trans which Dave you from a headache of disassembling everything.

Send the converter back to sinister and they will open it up.

That play looks normal. I had a concern about the play and sent a video to sinister, the builder said it was normal.

Make sure to send him extra money to insure your torque converter for return shipping. I sent mine in, USPS lost it when he shipped it back and he told me he’s sorry, he wasn’t responsible for it.

Usps lost the convertor - u were out 900 bucks

Yes. Mike has been great with customer service. But as you may know he likes you to ship it in a large rate flat box to him and he’ll send it back in a large flat rate box. He told me to send $25 via PayPal and he’d ship it back. USPS lost it and he didn’t add any additional insurance so it’s only covered for $50. He stated “I only add insurance if the customer tells me to and pays the extra fee.”. So my suggestion would be make sure you send additional money to him to cover insurance, the topic was never brought up and I just assumed he was adding it. Just hate to see someone else be out all that money.

I will tell you now that if there was any type of oil in that converter and it leaked onto the box, it likely wasnt lost but rather tossed because of the leakage, either the box fell apart or the leaking fluid got it tagged as a potentially hazardous item and it ended up quarantined somewhere, pack properly and flush all fluids out of it, wrap it in shrink wrap, double box it put it in a garbage bag inside of the box and write on the outside "automotive parts" so that oil leaks wont flip anyone out.

ive witnessed the complete opposite. hell i broke a shep stage 2 trans on a 30mph roll in my car meanwhile my tuner has went 10.20s with a stock auto with just a converter.
I bet you the trans would still be running if i was using a stock convertor. It doesnt mattet though my trans is getting the complete jeff bush, kiggly treatment. Billet transfer gear, kiggly billet 3rd . Jeff bush forward basket. Should be solid

This was a brand new unit shipped from mike, no fluid... brand new converter. USPS lost it, he didn’t put additional insurance on it and says it’s not his problem. So that’s a great point, make sure it’s packaged well with no leaks. Also make sure you make it very clear you want additional insurance added to your return shipping so you’re not out the cost of the converter. Just looking out for everyone making sure it doesn’t happen to anyone else.

it sounds like its an unfortunate mishap with yours. both my tuner and i both ran the same sinister 8" converter.
