Hi all,
New to the forums and back into the DSM world after 10+ years. I had a 1G in high school that I wrecked and the wife just let me pull the trigger on this 97 GSX as a project car! I am excited to get back into it but it is going to be a bit of an uphill battle with this car. I am out of the Inland Empire in southern California.
PROS: The price was right, it has a clean CA title and is currently registered! The car also came with some level of documentation and correct/decent mods from what I can tell. It also looks like it might have been installed and tuned by a well-known shop in northern CA but I wasn’t able to confirm that.
Mods include 16g, Injen intake, evo 8 injectors, turbo back exhaust, FMIC (I believe CX/Punishment Racing), mishimoto radiator, AEM wideband, Autometer oil psi gauge & boost gauge, and DSM Link! I was told the head and valves were done about 10k miles ago but no documentation was provided. There is no AFPR or fuel pump upgrade though.
CONS: The car isn’t currently running, hence the price was right. The 30amp ignition fuse is blowing when the key is turned to the “ON” position. In doing a search it seems like this is a short to ground scenario and that this fuse is connected to nearly everything! I am hoping I can fix this and get the car back up and running fairly quickly. I have read some old forums on this issue and I just posted my own forum in the “Electrical Tech” section with some questions. If you can, please go there and help me out!
I am taking a gable that the engine and drive train are in decent shape but I did have a mechanic inspect the car on a lift and run a leak down test prior to purchasing. The leak down performed okay but cylinders 2 and 3 didn’t hold pressure as well as 1 and 4. The car had been sitting for a couple months before I bought it though.
The other uphill battle is getting the car to pass CA smog. Since I bought the car not running I was not able to provide a smog cert within 90 days of sale to DMV. Once I get the car running I think I will need to get it to pass smog before I can complete the full registration. If anyone has experience with this it would be helpful as well. I haven’t purchased a car over 5 years old in some time.
Thanks all!
