I finally decided to button the car up and see if all my hard work over the winter paid off. My GSX last year, only ran a best of 12.90@105 with a 16G, fmic, 550's etc. Over the winter, I overhauled all the mods. I put in some 660's, FRH manifold, HKS 272's, IRC Race Core, and the FP Green.
I took the car out in early May to an import event, and proceeded to lay down some very unimpressive #'s. The best run of the day was a blistering 12.77@108. I only got 6 runs in as this was an actual import event, and not a T&T, so 1/2 of those rounds were either qualifying or eliminations. I couldn't figure out why the car was so piss slow, so when I got home, I found out that the tubing for my O2 housing had damn near cracked off. This allowed a LOT of exhaust gasses to escape.
AFter about 2 weeks, I finally got that fixed, put a true 3" downpipe on the car, replaced that shitty 2G snorkel tube with my awesome $17 Home Depot intake, reran some vacuum lines, and decided to give it a shot. Drove 75 miles to the track for a T&T session. Set the boost to 22psi, and buckled in to see what she would do.
My first pass was purely a test pass. Launched at idle and granny rowed through the gears. 14.4@106 w/a 2.5 60'. Well, the mph is already almost as fast as my best pass. Now it was time to push the car to see what it could do. Next pass went 12.63@107 1.78 60'. Not bad, but still WAY off from where I need to be. I kept leaning the car out more and more and kept picking up 1-2mph and dropping off .1-.2 every run. At 7:30pm, I ran a 12.46@111. I was starting to feel pretty damn good now. Just by installing that new downpipe and intake, I've already shaved a good .3 off my best time with the car.
It's now 8p, and a line of Mustangs come pulling into the pit area. They just so happen to park next to me. The leader of the group is driving an 03 Cobra. It's modded with an X pipe, catback exhaust, Lightning 2.93 pulley, and Nitto 555R's. My plates read QWK LIL 4, so he asks what my "shitbox" (his words, not mine) runs. I told him, quick enough to smoke that POS. We decide we need to settle this on the track. I let him get the car ready. We line up, i wait for him to do his burnout. We stage, the light turns green, and the race was over!!!!! He slept at the light, spun the tires, and prolly missed 4 gears. I beat him by a good 5 cars. I got my slip and immediately covered my side and just looked at his side. He ran a 13.1@115mph. I'm thinking, damn. I must have gone pretty quick that run. 12.27@113!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WHOA!!!!! Now the car is REALLY moving.
Needless to say, he didn't say much when we got back to the pits, except "this track sucks. I can't get any traction" blah blah blah. I had to agree as my 1.80 60's were less than impressive. I wanted to hit the 11 sec. pass so bad, I could taste it. I leaned the car out a few more %, then went back for more. Before I left though, I dropped my tire psi down to 30psi (totally forgot they were at 40psi for daily driving). My first pass, I launched nice and hard. Cut a 1.68 60' but couldn't find 2nd gear to save my life. Went back around, cut another 1.69 60' but no 2nd gear again!! WTF???? I let the car cool down for another 25 minutes and give it one last shot. The car comes out awesome again, another 1.68 60' but soemthing in the back of my mind told me to shift early so 2nd gear would grab. I normally shift at 8k from the 1-2 shift, but I grabbed 2nd gear at 6200 and the turbo did NOT like that. At least it went INTO 2nd this time. Car went flat but quickly picked back up. I crossed the line and thought to myself, "that run felt like complete shit". I knew I went a LOT slower than the previous run due to that really short shift. I get my slip. 12.28@113 with a super short 2nd gear shift!! Damn!!! If I could cut a 1.68 60' and shift at 8k, i KNOW that 11 sec. pass is there.
However, it all came at a price. On the way back to the pits, 2nd gear was basically non-existant. It would go into gear, but pop out. All the other gears were ok. I decided not to push it, so I just went home. All in all, I'm happy with the 12.27@113 I ran on 22psi and my little FP Green. Next trip out, I WILL have the 11 second pass.
Did I mention this was on pump gas and a full interior'd car? Only weight reduction was no A/C, no balance shafts, no front bumper, but I DO have leather int. and a sunroof (which is a killer). I gotta send my tranny to Shep to have it rebuilt, so I"m hoping to get it back in time for the SO.
Just thought I would share my only 2 trips to the track this year.
