Just bout a 92 awd laser off of a friend w/ the 6bolt 4 bolt combo for relitively cheap. hes owned the car for i think nearly 5 years and has had no issues with it for his past 2 years of driving it, was well maintained and fixed.
This car has seen its fair share of drag racing ( best of 11.9 115mph on e316g and race gas) and a lot of autocross and stuttar box launches.. ( Built trans )
and since its already fairly built i am only going to carry over a few mods from my gst and only do exterior and interior touch ups to the car and hope to just drive it for the next yr without a headache like my gst caused me.

Well anyways we did a compression test on it ( this one has somewhere around 86k on the block and maybe less than half of that on the head)
And it scored

Starting from the timing belt cover going towards the left-
147, 150, 160, 160 ( Stock 1g compression ratio. )

I think you dont want more than a 14 psi difference...?
The 160s on that test I believe were due to carbon build up since it was on the richest cylinders, and possibly why the one with 147 and 150 were on the leanest cylinders...

But it did take about 6 to 7 cranks for it to get its full compression therefore shows sign of wear. This car does have blow by and according to him burns about 1 quart of oil every 4- 500 miles ( with a good amount of boosting/racing during these miles... ). Which for my driving Id think that would equal to about 1 quart a month...
Does that seem normal? I know older dsms can consume quite a bit of oil especially under boost...

His car does throw a light film of blue smoke ( oil ) out under boost... ( Turbo is fairly new)
You wont see it in the day time, only at night in the head lights, and doesnt smoke one bit on idle, partial throttle or cruising, or when revving it up from a stop. Only under full throttle w/ boost will it emit light smoke ( once again not visible at day time. )

We pretty much say its blow by from age ( Both his pcv lines hang down towards the street )

As Ive discussed with my friend im hoping I can get at least a year out of this engine without any troubles and without the oil consumption worsening any just to have a fast car to drive back and forth from work and school basically.
I am very good with keeping up with oil though because my gst had/has very very bad valve stem seal problems and I had to put a quart of oil in every two weeks w/ regular driving, and it would be even worse if I drove hard.

Anyways Just trying to get some feedback thanks!

I will most likely last a year realistically unless you;re on it constantly, but keep up with maintenence and catch any problems you think can be potentially worsened, i've been on a 92 talon 6/4 for 2 years (about 6 months of my brother driving it) and no problems until i sold it. just keep up with it like any other car.

Did it have blow by/ smoke any>?
Yea im just trying to get opinions.

My gst was rebuild so it only had 5k and i dont know how long dsm motors usually last with hard boosting.
We are setting it up with a rather conservative tune and leaving it at 18psi, even though we can run much more we figure it will have better longevity by not turning it past 18...
I was leaning on 19 tho but dunno if its worth it. I dont want to sacrafice any reliability.

Just picked up a awd laser from a friend with like 86 on the block and maybe around 12k on the head...he's own the car for 5 years. This car has been well upkept, modded, everything mechanically replaced, and has already gone an 11.9 at 115 in the 1/4 on a evo3 at 26psi on race gas, and on pump gas making just shy of 300whp. Im hopeing this car can last a year of daily driving as my gst was having too many problems. In a year i will be ready to spend on a rebuild and possibly do a 2.3 but in the meantime wondering whats the average miles these motors get with good maintence... It has a keydiver tune, and even though it has the fuel for 500whp we are limiting boost at 18psi for longevity reasons even though i was considering 19.Hes been driving the car for the past year without a single problem on 18lbs so i figured why change that.

Compression on this car ( from right to left ) is 147,150,160,160 ( The last two due to carbon build up since those two are the richest cylinders im sure. ) And it seems to have some blow by ( no dipstick popping out though )
But at night it has a light blue smoke under full boost that can faintly be seen in your headlights if you were driving behind this car, not visible from in the car though ( yea turbo is new), but never a hint of smoke at idle nor partial throttle only under wot. ( Not very much smoke though you cant see it in daytime. )
And my friend says it burns a quart of oil every 4 to 500 miles w/ a lot of boosting during those miles... ( I suppose thats regular on a dsm this age. ) So thats roughly a quart and a half every month i suppose.
I had a thread about it in the cylinder head short block section but figured not that many ppl can view that section and post there because of their newbie status and all opinions are worth something so ill try here...

I dont know how long these dsms can go normaly before an over haul
would like to see some of yall milage and whether or not any of yall ever smoke or anything... Thanks...

My 92 Tsi awd has about 86 on it...0 miles on the rebuild.
My 92 Gs has about 68 on it. Mostly stock.
The 90 Tsi awd I just sold had well over 100k, though it was shot. Never drove it...

I like low mile dsm;s...Woop

Oh, and I dont think the engine smoked before I rebuilt it...Only drove it 4 miles since Ive had it. The gs though runs great. Drove it from Indiana to Iowa just fine.

my 2g talon kicked out 169 thousand miles before the motor blew early this month. Still looks amazing and ran great till the day she died.

Going to keep the car for quite some time so i guess i will be posting in a few years when the chassis has well over 300k =)

Wow thats a lot of miles...
So with good maintance i should easily be able to reach 100k on my car before I have to rebuild the bottom huh.

See ive never delt with a high milage turbo dsm
my first dsm was non turbo with 105k and only lasted till 115 k due to water pump and bad bearings and it was turboed during that time which didnt help.
my gst only has 5k on it ( got a stock 6bolt rebuild, the one in the picture ) and i want awd now so im getting rid of it because im tired of spinning tires 1st and 2nd w/ my evo3 LOL.

So now i have this awd dsm with 86k w/ a 12k head... ( By the way this laser has a built tranny and built suspension w/ a 2100 pressure plate and kevlar clutch and fd3s rx7 rims and autocross worthy wheels already so no worries there. )
But keep the stories coming. And Id like to know about yall oil consumption.

i got a 95 gst with just aroundf 105k and and only major repair i have done so far is replaced the turbo and that went out when she rolled over to 100k. i mean she gonna need to be gone threw soon though do to low compression but for now she still pulls good and no smoke:thumb:

joe:dsm:

152k on my Tsi FWD (with rebuilt heads, stupid timing belts)

122k on my Tsi AWD, (rebuilt bottom end, and a/b to be rebuilt heads)

Ok , so im starting to feel better about my 86k on the block...
I just didnt really know how well turbo cars hold up with a lot of milage...
I will have this thing rebuild though before it goes past 100k and it would take
me at least another year and a half to go from 86 to 100k...
This thread is helpful so far...
But i would still like to know more on yall oil consumption. ( Whether you have none and can hold all its oil till oil change time, or whether you have to dump 3 to 4 quarts in a month like my old saturn did with bad rings. )

If there is no knock and you maintain it well, check your bearings often you will be alright in my opinion. I run 27-28psi at the track and on weekends when im feeling bold, I used to do 25psi daily but I dont see that huge gain from those 2ps- so it isnt even worth the risk in my opinion and it just causes me to speed, which is bad, and I have too many tickets to begin with. LOL. I love my DSMs.

That 27-28psi is on race gas btw, Im not crazy enough to try it on pump.

On 93 octane we were running an 11.5 afr with altered 1g timing maps ( a little more aggressive )
at 17 psi w/ a fmic on 450s w/ a n/t fuel pressure reg thats bumps fuel pressure up to 48. All of this is controlled and compensated correctly with the chip and calculations to fuel injector sizing had to be adjusted for us to run this n/t fpr.
It also has a 2g mass ( I have a evo8 mass thats worked very well on my gst and i thought about swapping that over to it also but i may just leave the 2g mass)...
I am going to carry over my 850ccs from my gst though and tune it in on the chip for the 850s and lower down the afr to 11.1 and raise the boost to 18 while leaving the same timing maps, but with the current feed back I may gone and run 19 or 20 instead of leaving it at 18. This car has a datalogger and a knock buzzer by the way.
It pulls very hard already so i dont know how much the extra 10-15whp gain from raising the boost to 20 will be worth it in terms of longevity on a street car... ( I wont hardly ever track it, maybe once or twice. )
Whether I do or dont raise boost the two things that for sure are going in during this next year is cams ( like some comp 1001s, 272s, or some fp2s. ) and I have a cyclone intake manifold that can get installed on it whenever I feel like doing it and between the cams and cyclone that would give this thing some nice torque gains which i want.

I even debated going with a bigger fmic w/ short route one day, my ultimate goal for this car after getting it built to a 2.3 stroker is running a bb50 trim or bigger and meth injection.

over 210,000 stock motor. The tranny we opened up for a SBR insert last summer and still looked good

so with good maintenance these cars will run along time.

Mine does burn a little oil from blow by does not pop the dip stick but it leaks more then anything else

It anti-rust coats it self every day.

1 qt ever 700 miles of hard driven.

My 98 GS-T had 55k miles when I bought it, 65k miles when I sold it.
My 95 GSX had 66k miles when I bought it, currently has around 78k.
My DD 95 GSX currently has 126k+ miles on original motor/timing belt/brakes/everything. Still going strong!

A lot of miles for a turbo car, thats pretty impressive...
Do you expect a overhaul soon LOL.? Or feel like this thing is going to perform
for you for quite awhile still.

Maintenance is key to these engines, I have bad luck with transmissions though, I blew up an OEM trans with less than 1000 miles on it due to the 3rd to 4th shift fork, before that was my clutch, before that is was my rearend, before that is was my transfer case, i could keep going but im not going to LOL.

Im impressed your trans is healthy yet, good to hear some survive LOL.
