(Sorry mod's for the really BIG picture but I wanted you guys to see it upclose)So yesterday I hit a puddle and my alternator belt came completely off. I inspected my crankshaft pulley and it looks like its in ok shape, I mean there are SOME cracks around the edge of the rubber part (not completely all the way around, only a little bit about an 1 inch if that around). And there are no cracks or missing metal (outer edge). I took some pictures so you guys can see it. Replace it or not to replace it that is the question.

And I'll throw my 0.02 worth in...........if it's cracked (circled in red^^^^), it's bad. Replace it.

And a resize on the picture would help.

Ya my bad bro, I just wanted you guys to see it upclose. Again im sorry ill resize it right now, I bought another belt and started the car to see if that was it and it was just shaking like crazy. Im going to replace it tommorow after work.

You need a harmonic balancer on a non-balanced engine, not a crank pulley (which does not have a balancer/dampener built in, which is the rubber part).

I paid $99 for a new stock balancer, PM me if you want details.

I personally have never been a big fan of un-dampened crank pulleys for a street car. Some have used them with success, but I've seen/read far too many horror stories behind them. The OEM dampened crank pulley should only be around $100-$125 from the dealer.

I've purchased several items from these guys with success:

What would be the ill effects of this crank pulley? The ## one.

I have a 2G Unorthodox Underdrive crankpully i never got in my 2G before i had to sell it, I'll sell it to you for $100.00 + S&H, bought it from prostreetonline.com but wanted a 40% restock =\. PM Me.

Well I called Mitsu before I ordered the Slowboy Racing one and they wanted 145 bucks

They tried to up the price on me when I called them too. I went to the dealer with like 4 printouts of different dealerships who quoted me $95 and change. They have not tried it since ;).

Doesn't sound like you asked one of our Sponsor dealers. Shame on you.
San Rafael was $85, about a year ago- when I told them I was on DSMtuners. Their regular price was $125.

Unless you already re-sized that pic (and thank you if you did), 699 is fine. And yes, that one's bazootied. And my god, it looks like it's been sitting at the bottom of the China Sea for sixty years.

I've never heard of an aftermarket crank pulley causing problems. I replaced mine several months ago with an aftermarket one i had laying around.

Can somebody please educate me so i can remove mine from my car before anything happens?

FORGET ABOUT ANY TALK CONCERNING CRANKWALK..........but here are a few horror stories THAT COULD BE attributed to an un-dampened crank pulley. The jury is still out, but for the price relative to the gain, I personally don't think it's worth it. IMO, my money can be better spent elsewhere.

my 0.02.

I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss it; the SRT4 guys are experiencing crankwalk, mostly from the ones running undampened pullies.

"And my god, it looks like it's been sitting at the bottom of the China Sea for sixty years" Welcome to the east coast where we still like to throw 5 tons of salt on a quarter mile of road.

Now that I think of it, when I replaced my engine, my crank pulley was in two pieces with no rubber in between. I thought it was odd there was no harmonic balancer or anything, but I didn't know enough about DSM's at the time to realize it wasn't supposed to be that way. So all I did was bolt it back up exactly the way I removed it. I haven't had any trouble yet (after about 10k miles) but now this thread is scaring me into changing it...
