Ok, when I'm just driving around usually my EGT is reading around 14. This isn't getting on it or anything, just standard daily driving. The past weekend I took a trip, on the highway, in fifth gear at about 2700 rpm and only 60mph my EGT was going up to almost 16. I'm just having a hard time believing it.

What should I check for with this? I know that hitting 16 is NOT good. Not sure what other info I should provide, but any feedback would be appreciated.

Good post DSMunknown. The placement of the probe can have a dramatic effect as well. Is yours in runner #1?

You need to log your timing to really find out what's going on. An EGT is only an indicator that you need to check something out.

Thanks guys. I'm gonna do some testing tomorrow and see what's going on. I always mix stuff up, runner 1-the one closest to timing belt, right? If so, yes.

ok. so weith, why did you ask if it was on 1? I'm going out a bit later with my logger. I'll post up the results when i get back and hopefully get some feedback.

Because cylinder #1 and #2 typically run the hottest. If you had it tapped into #4 and were hitting 1600 degrees, you'd be in serious trouble.

I looked at your mod list and didn't see anything to control fuel. Do you have a DSMlink, SAFC etc?

oh yeah, I have a SAFC, I thought I had that listed, guess I'll have to update LOL.

Generally people tap #1 because it should be the leanest (not necessarily hottest because an extremely rich condition can ignite late, even into the exhaust, being even hotter than a lean condition).

I'm just trying to get a background on things.

The best use of an EGT, IMO, is to identify something abnormal. Once you have a good tune and know what temp you should be at, the EGT will let you know if something isn't working right...just look for a deviation from your norm.

Bottom line, you need a logger to see what's going on, at minimum.
