Turbo was making a strange noise for a little while, I thought it was nothing, then I upped the boost to 12 and it got louder, really loud, I had someone take a quick video of me going by, I kept boosting it (it is now at 9lbs but still sounds just as loud) here is the video:

http://media.putfile.com/Whistling-sound

let me know what you think, I checked the turbo for shaft play and it has a little, the turbo is brand new w/300-500 miles, it James

I don't know what you have for a turbo, but I have had many customers, as well as my owns cars with 14bs that make that noise as they are getting ready to die.

Every turbo I have had that has made that noise has died within a few hundred miles.

It could be the compressor wheel rubbing on the compressor housing. Does the comressor wheel look damaged at all?

There should be NO in-and-out shaft play and a little side-to-side shaft play.

well, do you guys just think I should buy this rebuild kit or what? previous owner said the turbo was brand new, what could cause this? here's the rebuild kit i was looking at:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/TD05...006QQitemZ160033777677QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW

they have good feedback comments and only 1 negative, this looks like the right kit, the turbo I have is a Small 16G.
, the turbo exhaust side is ported so i would hate to just get rid of it.

If you don't mind taking the turbo in and having it rebalanced after you put it back together then get the rebuild kit. If you are hesitant to get a new turbo due to the fact that you ported this one, don't fret you can just change the housing to the new turbo. However if the problem is cost of a new turbo I can understand wanting to rebuild the current turbo.

However 16gs are very inexpensive nowadays.

If you are looking into a rebuild kit, I would try www.gpopshop.com.

I have had nothing short of superb interactions with them.

Even if you buy the rebuild kit, and rebuild the turbo, you will need to get the turbo balanced.

so you think I should pay $300 for the rebuild when the turbo itself is worth 300? that doesn't make much sense and I am out of money, I'm trying to get ahold of the guy who sold it to me to see where he bought the turbo from.

Thats why it might behoove you, if you had the money, to just get a new turbo.

I went out and re-checked the shaft play, NO in and out, very little side to side/up and down, when I say little I mean like 2 pieces of paper thickness

Can you look in the compressor and see the wheel, and see if there looks to be any markings on it, or the housing itself?

is there any oil leeking from the oil feed line?

my turbo was in PERFECT condition. about 1 week ago it started leaking from the oil feed line and all the sudden there is a mark in the housing where the wheel touched and plenty of recently occurring shaft play...

Do a boost leak test. I've seen and heard noises like this come from couplers that were not fully tight.

this sounds like it could be my problem, I'll take some pictures of the turbo housing(I can't see in there taht well, almost everything is still hooked up) and I'll take off the oil feed, maybe something is blocking, it's leaking, or the oil return is backed up, I'll post the pics when I get them.

well, I tried replacing the washer and I broke the bolt, sheared it right at the face of the head, any ideas on how to remove it without damaging anything? and how tight should this bolt be? I thought since t was a crush washer I had to crush it to get it to work, guess I pushed to hard.

I would think an easy out would work well since the bolt is allready hollow.

When tightening the bolt you should feel it get "snug" then loosen slighly(crushing), then snug back up again. Bolt should be tight.

I don't know the exact torque value but it is not very much. Go easy.

EDIT: The torque rating on the banjo bolt for the oil feed is 10-14 ft lbs

I don't have any more crush washers, could I just put a regular washer on with black silicone? the easyout took the bolt out in about 3 sec, thanks for the idea !

by the way, noone commented onthe pics, how bad is it?

what the heck? is anyone else's oil feed tube have this small of a hole? this is the part that bolts to the head. I went to napa and bought a crush washer, installed it snug and tightened/cleaned everything. I then took it for a drive with the wastegate arm off hoping the oil would soak into anything that was lacking it, no squeling, went up to 3 lbs and no whistlng, then I hooked up the arm and took uit for a run, this time the whistling was terribly loud! I brought it home and took off everything, this is the oil feed tube, no cracks or anything but this hole is REALLY small!

gpopshop is good indeed, but they give me rediculous prices on things, for what they charged me for a turbo housing and a compressor housing i was better off buying a whole new turbo from them, but maybe i don't know if thats the the price mitsu makes them sell for.

but that is for sure metal to metal my friends ko4 in his audi sounded like that and he got a whole rebuilt ko4 from gpopshop.

If you're worried about good oil feed, get the upgraded SS oil feed line from Road/Race Engineering. It will send fresh oil right after being filtered.

You may still need to replace/rebuild your turbo though. If it *was* making that sound from lack of oil, it probably means the damage has been done.
