hey guys, this may be a stupid thought but i am replacing my front bumper and fenders and the thought of puting the stock sidemount behind the foglight/grill came across my mind kinda like a cheap way for a front mount, would it make a difference or is do u think it would just be a waist of time...

thanx:dsm:
(1990 eagle talon tsi) by the way

I'm pretty sure that if your running a stock turbo, stock sidemount, it will not make enough of a difference to notice. You shouldn't be getting heatsoak where it is now, because it is placed there for a reason. I wouldn't waste any time on moving the sidemount, as for a front mount, it's probably not needed for 14b turbo either because you probably wouldn't flow enough to fill the front mount. i'd just stick with the sidemount where it is for now. Ontop of that 1g sidemounts are bigger than 2gs and they should be plenty for a stocker for right now. Unless you have some stuff done to it?

The stock SMIC is still going to flow the same wherever it is located. By simply moving the intercooler the only difference you may see is a little bitmore air hitting it. If you cut the inlet and outlet pipes off of it, and put 2.25 or 2.5" piping then you will have something that helps, but simply moving it won't do much for you.

thanks...its acually a ported 14b i figured id give it a shot since the front end is off anywayand i have tons of piping layin aroound

It seems to me that you have the right idea, but are going about it incorrectly. Why not just fabricate a custom air duct that collects air from both the original fender air hole and the fog light hole? Or have a trusted local shop fabricate a custom air duct for you to do the same thing?

Click on the link below and choose the "Sidemount IC and pipes" option.

This is the 1G SMIC with larger end tank pipes. I am skeptical that this will give you drastically improved results, but you can decide for yourself. Until you get a larger SMIC or a FMIC, you won't see much of a difference doing small things with your stock SMIC.

A front-mount isn't "needed" for a 14b, but that doesn't mean that it's not useful OR fully functional. On my 14b-equipped 2g, I get faster boost response WITH the FMIC and longer piping than I did with the stock SMIC. Odd, I know.

Putting a SMIC in a front mount location would be more work than it is worth, though.

Precisely. Which is why I suggested redirecting additional air to the OEM location.
